john seely brown on foss
today at SECT jsb [as everyone seems to call him] said a few interesting things about foss:
1) foss code is written to be read. this is a very big deal and a new things.
2) people can learn from code they can read and more folk can get involved.
3) but the key to foss is not simply open code, but open systems and open discussion.
? = what enables the latter two things?

freedom and oreilly OSCONs
no surprises, "freedom" is a keyword in oreilly oscon and eurooscon ... curious as to what this freedom is about, looks likely to be free, as in free markets. also of interest to me, more of "foss is for developing countries" rhetoric ...
more of this...

book: "The Success of Open Source," Stever Weber
just got the book in the mail today ... looking forward to reading, kinda liked a working paper from BRIE (
Berkeley Roundtable on the International Economy he wrote called
The Political Economy of Open-Source Software, but i didn't like his talk at USC on "online communities." [re-read notes and explain] either way, what he has to say about FOSS is insightful, should be an interesting read.
